1. Shock Loads and Pressure Spikes

Scenario: Engaging the drum drive when the drum is stationary and loaded, or encountering a stiff mix, creates instantaneous shock loads that can generate pressure spikes exceeding 1.5x the system's relief valve setting.

Failure Mode: These shocks can crack gear teeth (fatigue failure), brinell bearing races, or deform the geroler cam profile.

Mitigation & Emergency Protocol: The hydraulic system must be equipped with a properly sized and functioning cross-port relief valve (often integral to the motor or in the control valve). A tell-tale "bang" or severe knock during engagement indicates excessive shock. Continued operation in this state will destroy the motor. Inspection of the relief valve and system dampening is the first diagnostic step.

 

2. Case Pressure Management and Contamination

The Issue: All LSHT motors have internal leakage (slippage) for lubrication. This oil must be allowed to drain freely back to the tank via the case drain line. Restricting this line causes a buildup of case pressure.

Catastrophic Consequence: Excessive case pressure (often >5-10 bar) will blow out the shaft seal, leading to massive oil loss and immediate contamination ingress. It can also collapse internal seals and displace rolling elements.

Mandatory Maintenance Point: The case drain line must be plumbed directly to the reservoir with no restrictions (no valves, filters with high back-pressure). It should be inspected for kinks or blockages during every service. A failed shaft seal is very often a symptom of a case drain problem, not a cause.
